Really, NOT a phrase you want to hear from your psychiatrist. As in "I don't know how to help you. I'm out of ideas when it comes to your insomnia."
6 years of trying to find effective drugs to combat my various degrees of inability to sleep that don't cause intolerable side effects and it comes to an end. It comes to "I don't know what to tell you anymore." Rather disheartening to say the least.
The cyproheptadine seems to be at last a part of why I'm having severe headaches and migraines. So I called Dr S to see if he had any other ideas. Nope, he doesn't. He said he'd give me a call on Monday with the number for a sleep dr as he thinks that's probably the only route we haven't really tried. I did have a sleep study done at the local hospital a few years ago but that didn't lead to any answers or suggestions.
I mean I pretty much know why I don't sleep well- stress. The more stressed I am the harder it is to turn my brain off to fall asleep, stay asleep and not have severe panic inducing nightmares. And stress is one thing that I struggle to manage even on a good day.
So for now I'm still taking the cyproheptadine and dealing with headaches. And will see where a visit with a dr who specializes in sleep leads me.
Exciting changes at The Daily Headache!

Hey, it's me, Janet, trying to help again...have you tried ativan? My mother has very bad insomnia, nothing helps her. she switches from ativan to lunesta right now. Just thought I would post a suggestion...you probably have tried these but...hope the sleep doctor can help...good luck...janet
Yeah ativan works for a bit, then I end up having to take a higher, then higher, then higher dose as my body becomes accustomed to it and finally I end up chemically dependent on it. That and last year my insurance plan stopped covering any of the benzos. Which kind of stunk since I use to take some to help when I was having severe panic attacks. But not anymore, have to rely on other coping strategies.
And tried Lunesta too, that didn't do a thing. Ambien, Ambien CR, Rozerum, Melatonin, Melatonin CR, various old antipsychotics that are supposed to be sedating, various atypical antipsychotics that are supposed to be sedating, neurontin, warm milk (I'm lactose intollerant so that didn't go over very well), kava kava, valerian root, various antidepressants with sedating side effects, some mood stabilizers with sedating side effects, I'm probably forgetting some, but you get the picture.
One thing my friend suggested was trying the chemical in turkey that makes you tired- triptaphaline I think it's called. She sent me a link on where to get some in pill form. I am going to order some and try that.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
